Turtle hatching/nesting

This area of Costa Rica is an important home for vulnerable sea turtles. Leatherbacks, olive ridleys, and green turtles all nest and hatch on the beaches that stretch along the coast. Playa Ostional is home to a rare phenomenon known as arribadas (arrivals), where tens of thousands of sea turtles simultaneously come ashore at dusk to lay their eggs. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see a magnificent and breathtaking natural event.

Visit a Goat
Farm Rancho Avellanas

The farm has been in the family for over 34 years, during which time they’ve farmed many different animals and crops.  There are lots of cute goats on the farm and it’s well worth popping by to see them, peruse their small store full of goat products, and learn about farm life.

Avellanas is also perfect for long strolls on the beach, horseback riding, and the best sunsets.

You can also tour a coffee or rum plantation, hike a volcano, visit a spa, or just chill out in a hammock.

Sunset Playa Avellanas is one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful beaches – in tune and harmony with the beautiful natural surroundings and offering great surf with incredible flora and fauna. While you are there, look out for Lola, the pig that has lived there for as long as everyone remembers and that seems to rather enjoy swimming and taking a stroll on the beach. Take long walks along the mighty Pacific Ocean and do not miss the spectacular sunsets. Other animals you might spot on the beach include birds and monkeys like the famous Howler Monkeys.

Horseback Riding

There’s nothing more picturesque than a horseback ride on the beach at sunset. When it’s low tide and the beach is peaceful and calm, it’s an ideal way to spend an evening.
