Grocery Shopping
In and around Playa Avellanas

Plan of time for groceries and supplies, Playa Avellanas does not have a full-sized grocery store nearby. It does have small mini-markets that carry some necessities. You may want to stock up on groceries and supplies during your stay at our home. Depending on your travel plans, Liberia has multiple large grocery stores only 15 minutes from the Airport. Directly across the highway from the airport is Price Smart, like Costco in the US; however, will require a yearly membership.
Walmart is located 15 minutes away from Liberia and near Alamo car rental, here you’ll find a great selection of groceries and supplies. There is also a Mega super grocery store on the way to Playa Avellanas on Hwy 155, near the exit to Tamarindo.

Other
Shopping Options

  • Maxi Pali: Maxi Pali is also another supermarket with very affordable prices, it has quite a variety of products. Their customer service is also superior. You can find a drugstore inside this supermarket.
  • Super Compro: Carries a large variety of products and products are presented well.
  • Auto Mercado supermarket: This is the fanciest grocery store in Costa Rica where you can find high-quality and even international products that you may not find anywhere else. Prices can be a bit higher than in other grocery stores in Costa Rica, but this place does check all the boxes in terms of quality, cleanliness, variety, and gourmet products.

Car Rental
At Liberia Airport

  • There are many car rentals in Liberia Airport, international and local. You will see car rental counters inside the airport and those companies have stationed agents for tourists who want to rent a car upon arrival. Most companies that have an airport counter are international ones like Budget, Enterprise, and Alamo. If that is you, find the company you’re interested in, and you can talk to their agent to check availability and prices.
  • If you decide to book the car, they’ll tell you where to meet the agent to take you to their airport office location to collect your car. In Costa Rica, car rental companies offer a meet and greet and have an airport office for clients to collect their cars as the international airports are too small and there isn’t a dedicated parking garage just for car rentals.
  • Once you exit customs (through the double doors where you cannot go back), you will be inside the airport check-in area. Right through the glass doors straight ahead, you will see a group of people holding up signs. Go through the glass doors and look for the sign of the car rental company you booked with. The car rental company may then shuttle you to their airport office to pick up the car and complete the paperwork.

Currency and
Credit Cards

  • The currency in Costa Rica is the Costa Rican colón (CRC).
  • Coins come in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500. Bills come in denominations of 1,000; 2,000; 5,000; 10,000; 20,000 and 50,000. US dollars are widely accepted in Costa Rica. Many hotels and tours will only provide prices for tourists in dollars.
  • Debit and credit cards are used widely. Expect large grocery stores, hotels, restaurants, malls, and more to accept credit and debit cards.
